12 – The Contrast
Between Calvinism & Arminianism – The Providence of God – Reprobation
The Providence of God – Reprobation
Reprobation can be seen as God’s choice of
some to suffer eternal damnation spiritually estranged from Him. In other words, “God has condemned the
non-elect to eternal punishment for their sins.” Walter A. Elwell, Ed., Evangelical Dictionary of Theology, Second Edition, 1012
Calvin did not like the doctrine, but
concluded that it was valid, citing many Scriptural examples, such as the
choice of Jacob over Esau, even before the twins were born (Genesis 25:21-23,
Romans 9:10-15). On the other hand,
Arminians seem to reject this argument seemingly because it does not appear to
be the thing that a just God would do, ignoring the Scriptural example. Ibid., 1013
Next we’ll look at “The Providence of God – Conclusion.”
